My journey to training as an executive coach with Henley Business School is perhaps an unconventional one.
I grew up loving theatre and dance. Originally from Richmond, North Yorkshire, I took trips to London at an early age to see the latest musicals.
As a teenager, I left Richmond for the bright lights of London to train as a professional dancer. I went on to lead a very successful fifteen-year career dancing and singing my way through the West End theatres in musicals such as Kinky Boots, Priscilla Queen Of The Desert and Starlight Express.
A career as a performer is a very tough gig - the schedules are tough, the work is physically and emotionally demanding and not conducive to spending time with loved ones and making time for the things that matter most in life. I loved performing but after 15 years, I started to sense something was missing.
Making the decision to leave theatre whilst performing in what would be my final West End show, I decided to try out all sorts of new things, I worked at a magazine, tried some TV presenting and even dabbled in production at ITV, but still something was missing.
After some further soul-searching, I decided to focus on my other great passion, sports coaching. I took a job coaching at a prestigious West London tennis club and this is when I started to realise what really makes me tick - soliciting impactful change in people’s lives had been the thread line of all of things I had tried before. I took all of these experiences and set my sights on an overarching passion for helping others.
I had witnessed the power of executive coaching through stories shared with me by my highly successful clients at the club and each of them kept nudging me “You’re made to coach”, “You’d be great at that”. So, I retrained at Henley Business School in their postgraduate Executive Coaching programme and have never looked back.
Although I’ve always coached lots of different clients, being a gay man growing up very close to my three sisters and mother, I’ve always had a natural affinity for working with and supporting women.
Given the pivotal role that confidence and mindset has played throughout my professional career – performing, speaking, singing – my executive coaching has also naturally evolved towards helping my clients build their confidence and mindset – to ditch doubt and overwhelm, to know who they are, show up authentically, take centre stage in their own lives, feel clear about the direction they want to take, and ensure they have what it takes to achieve their biggest business, career and personal goals.
